“T he people I have met in seeking to save and restore the canyon have opened my eyes to secrets I would never have known existed. They have helped me see into a Red-tailed hawk’s nest, read a fox track in the dust, and know the plants that connect us to the earliest people on this land. The canyon contains riches that we seek to share with all San Diegans – and to pass on to future generations.”
Debby Knight, Founder
Friends of Rose Canyon
The Friends of Rose Canyon is an all-volunteer group dedicated to the protection, preservation, and restoration of Rose Canyon. The Friends of Rose Canyon was formed in March 2002, in response to the proposed construction of a bridge over Rose Canyon at Regents Road. The Friends currently has 850 members, divided fairly equally between north and south University City, and some members from other areas of the city. Membership is free and most members live in University City.
The Friends has a core group of about twelve people who meet every month or two and who have a variety of skills and interests, all centered around a love of nature and Rose Canyon Park. The Friends’ interests cover: native plants and their restoration, birds, and the great variety of other animal species found in the park. Members walk and run regularly in the canyon, sharing wildlife and plant sightings with each other and with the Department of Park and Recreation, and report any problems to the rangers or to the appropriate city department.
The Friends of Rose Canyon and in particular its founder, Debby Knight, have helped to raise awareness about Rose Canyon and its natural values.
